How to contact Brimbank City Council in your language

To contact us in your language, call the TIS National Interpreting Service at 131 450. When your call is answered, please say your language in English and ask to speak with Brimbank City Council on 9249 4000.

The cost is the same as a local phone call.

Recycling, Rubbish and Waste Collection

Rubbish bins with the red or dark green lid are emptied every week.

Recycling bins with the yellow lid are emptied every second week.

If you have ordered one, the green waste with light green lid is emptied every second week.

You can order a green waste bin by contacting us.

You can also book in one free hard waste collection from your home each year.

If you have a Council green waste bin at home you can now put raw and cooked food scraps, including fruit, vegetables, meat, seafood, bones, noodles, rice, eggshells, bread, dairy, coffee grounds and tea leaves in it from 1 July 2022.
 
Most things you can grow in a garden or eat can now go in your green waste bin.
 
Do not put plastics or plastic bags, coffee pods, tea bags, paper, nappies, or animal droppings in your green bin.
 
There is no additional charge to add food waste in your green bin, and no changes to when the green bin is collected.

Libraries

There are five libraries in Brimbank - Deer Park, Keilor, St Albans, Sunshine and Sydenham. All Brimbank libraries are closed on public holidays.

Library membership is free for all community members.

All libraries have Wi-Fi and public computers for use at no charge.

We have books, magazines and other resources in English and your language. These are available to you for loan or for reading in the library.

Rates

All property owners across Australia pay rates to their local Council to provide important services to the community like local roads, libraries, sporting grounds, parks and playgrounds, rubbish and recycling services.

Rates payments are due at the start of each financial year or quarterly on:

  • 30 September

  • 30 November

  • 28 February

  • 31 May

If you can’t pay your rates by the due date please contact us to make a suitable payment arrangement, or you can fill in a Hardship Application form.

Pet registration – dogs and cats

All dogs and cats older than 3 months in Brimbank must be microchipped, desexed and registered with Council. Pet registration is required by law.

To register your pet for the first time you’ll need:

  • A copy of your pet’s desexing certificate

  • Your pet’s microchip number.

Pet registration must be paid each year by 10 April. We will send out a letter each year to let you know when the renewal fee is due.

Neighbourhood houses and community centres

We run many different programs at our community centres, neighbourhood houses and art centres that you can take part in at no charge or low cost.

We have classes for all ages, stages and abilities, including:

  • Jobs, business skills and finance

  • Language, tutoring and education

  • Music and dance

Services for families and young children

Maternal and child health

Our registered nurses provide information and advice about the care and health of your child. This service is for children from birth to school age at no charge.

Childhood Immunisation Program

Our childhood immunisation program is delivered by registered nurses. Immunisation sessions are held regularly at locations across Brimbank.

If your child has had vaccinations overseas you can ask for a review of their immunisation history to ensure it meets Australian requirements. 

You can ask for this history statement and ‘catch up program’ from your doctor (GP) or through Council by appointment.

Playgroups and supported playgroups

Playgroup is an informal session where mums, dads, grandparents, caregivers, children, and babies meet in a relaxed environment. To find a playgroup that’s suited to you and your child, please contact us.

Kindergarten enrolment

All children in Victoria can access 15 hours of kindergarten each week in their year before school – where they turn 4 before 30 April in their year of attendance.

Brimbank Youth Services works with young people aged 10-25 who live, work, study or socialise in Brimbank to support them to participate in education, health and wellbeing, recreation and employment activities.

We provide support services to help seniors to remain active in the community and assistance to maintain independent living via delivered meals, home maintenance, and home care services.

Brimbank Community Register

If you live in Brimbank, are aged over 50 or have a disability, you can join the Brimbank Community Register to receive regular phone calls to make sure you’re okay, and an ID card in case of an accident.

Our parks, playgrounds, walking and bike paths are open for everyone to enjoy.

Leisure Centres, sport and recreation facilities

Join the Sunshine Leisure Centre or Brimbank Aquatic and Wellness Centre (opening 2022) to access swimming pools, group fitness classes and gymnasium.

You can play basketball, netball or volleyball at Keilor Basketball Netball Stadium.

Council also provides many sports reserves and facilities across the City for local sports clubs to use. New members are welcome.
